What’s with the Activision and Microsoft Deal
Michael Anthony Incorvaia
It feels like this deal with Activision and Microsoft is being dragged out for centuries. But this is still a massive deal for Microsoft if they pull it through. Strategically you can see how Activision is being bought for 69 billion dollars by Microsoft included with a massive array of technology and games that are extremely famous among the gaming community. This massive arsenal of games could help put Microsoft into the stratosphere of gaming and owning a significant portion of the games that people play. This will give them an up on both PC gaming because they now own more, but also an up on their large competitor Sony and their PX series. Aspects like this show how significant this deal is for Microsoft, one of the largest competitors, putting the pressure on the gaming world and community as a whole with major game franchises like Call of Duty and Overwatch.
The current problem as many people know is that there is a ton of political pressure and push back against the deal going through because they think this could offer Microsoft an uncompetitive advantage over everyone else. And while Microsoft will gain massive advantage and will be advantageous for their investors it is unlikely; they will gain this kind of total market advantage. This is because with the gaming industry constantly changing and there’s always a new game coming out this will simply put a ton of pressure on other companies like Sony to continue to adapt and offer new ways to compete against Microsoft, an ever-growing company especially in the gaming markets.
But right now, Microsoft is getting extensively questioned by the US FTC about aspects of the deal and whether or not this will be completely anticompetitive. But so far, they have been approved by the EU, and more recently blocked by the UK CMA and forced to retrial in the UK. All these aspects both in the US and in the UK put a lot of pressure on this massive deal as it continues to get extended out longer and longer. But for Microsoft it still seems like a great deal for them that will offer them another competitive edge, and for the other gaming companies like Sony this puts a ton of pressure on them to do something.
